Artist's Comments

The Carolina parakeet was the only parrot native to the United States. Sadly, the species is now extinct. This illustration is just a bird lover's fantasy of a place where parrots are as plentiful as the leaves on a tree.

I actually first got this picture in my head during my sophomore year of college, when we were assigned to do an illustration for a charity. At the time, though, I knew I couldn't pull it off. So three years later, I finally decided to give it a shot!

Copic multiliner for the line work, the rest is Photoshop.

EA Sports games, huh? That's so cute! Maybe she likes the sound effects. My bird hates Jeopardy because of the sound effects. But the other day we watched the Chipmunk Adventure (the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie from the 1980's - for nostalgic purposes ;)), and my birds were just so amused by those sounds.

I've never been birding, so I'd have to say that I'm just a bird person. I actually never really appreciated how awesome birds are until I got my cockatiel five years ago. Now I'm obsessed with pretty much any kind of bird!

(Actually, there is currently no functioning sound system hooked up to my brother's playstation...so her fascination is a mystery.) My bird loves watching cartoons, and for the most part likes listening to music (though it depends on the volume, and on the type of music)...she's a big fan of the Magical Mystery Tour album...

Outside of a rather depressing and lackluster biology field trip, I've not been birding either, nor do I have much interest in it...but I love watching birds, and while I've always enjoyed stalking ducks and that sort of thing, I became completely obsessed with birds since getting my cockatiel, too!
