This piece was inspired by Book 16 of the Iliad, where Achilles sends Patroclus out to battle in his place, then prays to Zeus for his safe return. This of course doesn't happen. Patroclus is wounded first by a spear between the shoulder blades, then another from Hector, straight through his gut and out the back.
Flying free of his limbs
his soul went winging down to the House of Death,
wailing his fate, leaving his manhood far behind,
his youth and supple strength. But glorious Hector
taunted Patroclus' body, dead as he was, "Why, Patroclus--
why prophesy my doom, my sudden death? Who knows?--
Achilles the son of sleek-haired Thetis may outrace me--
struck bymy spear first -- and gasp away his life!"
(Robert Fagles translation)
Black ink, white ink, watercolor. This is my first time using either black or white ink with watercolors... I wish the white ink was warmer, though...
Great work! Especially with the subtle incorporation of the Greek Key pattern. I don't suppose this has to do with "that project" you mentioned a while ago?
("greek key" = look, Ma, I know a fancy name for squarish spirals!)
Hehe, yeah, it kind of does have something to do with "that project." That's been on my list of things to do for about four years now, and I still can't commit to it! So I had to do a single quick illustration to get it out of my system. And your thesis paintings definitely gave me inspiration when it comes to adding pattern into the background. ^_^
P.S. I was planning to call you today, in a few hours. Let me know if that's not a good time!
Beautiful!
We've just been talking about the Illiad in my mythology class..
But I love this!

Designers/[artists] can make life more bearable by producing stuff that touches its audience rather than f***s them in the head.
